Description

The Leo Triplet is an interacting group of spiral galaxies located about 35 million light years away.  The edge-on NGC 3628 (also known as the Hamburger Galaxy) is transected by a broad band of dust.  It is considered a starburst galaxy and known to contain two populations of stars rotating in opposite directions.  NGC 3628 seems most affected by the group's interaction with a tidal tail spanning some 300,000 light years long.  The deformed spiral arms of M66 are experiencing a high rate of star formation activity.  While M65 appears a bit warped with evidence of relatively recent active star forming activity, it seems to have been the least affected by the group's interaction.

Upon researching the tidal tail, I found a paper "Discovery of a Tidal Dwarf Galaxy in the Leo Triplet" by B. Nikiel-Wroczynski, et al. written in April 2018.  It reports the clump at the end of the tidal tail (just above IC 2787 in my image) is actually a tidal dwarf galaxy that rotates independently of NGC 3628's tidal tail with a very high neutral gas content. At a distance of around 140 kpc from its parent galaxy, it would be one of the most detached objects of its type.
